Kalvis Zuters, (Born 1969, Jelgava, Latvia) graduated from the Department of Painting at the Latvian Academy of Art in 1998. He has participated in selected group exhibitions throughout Europe and USA and several solo exhibitions in Europe.
Painting occupies a prominent place in this small Baltic state. The Riga Academy of Art has produced a number of prominent artists, of whom the painter Kalvis Zuters is one of its more talented representatives.
On a technical level he shows great artistry and a skilful brush technique. With his work Kalvis invites us to discover a still unknown world which is only present in the mind of the artist. His characters, based on myths and fairy tales, portray to the viewer soft glances from another place encompassing a technique of mixture
and shades that demonstrates the artist's sensitivity. This technique makes him unique and incomparable to any other artist.
Figurative, with a twist of symbolism, realism and even cubism in a distinctive mixture in each of the works.
Reminding us of iconic figures from old and newer times.
Kalvis encourages the viewer to take their time to understand the message that lies within the work.

"First there might be admiration. Delicate sketching, light colouring, superb control of the glaze. And then, questions arise.
Because their neck is too gaunt to support their thinking head, because their nose is somewhat long and too sharp, perfectly apt for detecting perfidies, because their look is somewhat lifeless but yet full of loss, these improbably skinless figures have a peculiar force. Are they robots, puppets or simply human beings? We just don’t feel at ease! They live in icy grounds, often as smooth as glass, off and on crossed by strange meteors. Theirs is not the planet of ordinary lives. Certainties and their contingencies have been completely removed. We are swept off to Zuters’ much-loved land of silence and inner necessities. Maybe he hopes to meet souls touched by the force of absolute freedom, just like his?"
